Why Is My SHEGLAM Primer Pilling? Fixes for Oily and Dry Skin

Find the exact layer causing SHEGLAM primer pilling, then fix Good Grip, Camera On, or Pore No More for oily, dry, and combination skin.

If your SHEGLAM primer rolls into tiny flakes or balls, the problem is usually the way the layers are behaving together—not proof that the primer is defective. Too much skincare, sunscreen that has not settled, excess primer, repeated rubbing, or foundation applied over a wet or overly tacky layer can all cause pilling. Diagnose the exact step first, then change one variable at a time.

The 60-second diagnosis

  • Pilling before primer: your skincare or sunscreen is already rolling. Fix that layer first.
  • Primer pills when used alone: use less, press instead of rubbing, and test it over bare skin.
  • Pilling starts with foundation: the base application is disturbing the primer film. Let it settle and tap foundation on.
  • Only the T-zone pills: there may be too much moisturising product or primer in an oily area.
  • Only dry patches pill: visible flakes or uneven skin preparation may be catching the product.

This is a troubleshooting guide for the three SHEGLAM primers currently available at Jamila in Egypt. It complements our Good Grip vs Camera On vs Pore No More comparison, which helps you choose a formula. Here, the goal is to make the primer you already own work better.

What primer pilling looks like

Pilling happens when a layer gathers into small rolls, crumbs, or flakes as you spread another product across it. It can look like dry skin, but the particles may actually be a mixture of skincare, sunscreen, primer, and makeup. It often appears around the nose, between the brows, near the hairline, or anywhere you rub repeatedly.

Do a simple check before changing products: gently brush one loose piece onto a dark tissue or the back of your hand. If the skin underneath looks comfortable and the particles appear only after rubbing, you are probably seeing product roll-up. If your skin is visibly flaky before makeup, feels tight, or looks irritated, surface dryness or a skin reaction may also be involved.

Find the layer causing the problem

Test What the result suggests First change to make
Apply skincare and sunscreen, then wait without primer Rolling already appears when you touch the face Reduce or remove one skincare layer and let sunscreen settle
Apply primer over clean, dry skin on one small area Primer pills by itself Use half the amount and press it in once
Apply primer to both sides; add foundation to one side only Only the foundation side pills Wait longer and tap on a thinner base layer
Use primer on half the face Both sides pill in the same place Check skin preparation and the foundation technique
Use different primers by zone One zone improves Keep hydrating and blurring formulas where each is needed

Make only one change per test. If you replace moisturiser, sunscreen, primer, foundation, and sponge together, you may get a better result without learning which step caused it.

The seven most common causes of primer pilling

  1. Too many layers. Toner, serum, moisturiser, facial oil, sunscreen, primer, and foundation can each form a film. Your morning routine does not need every possible step.
  2. Too much product. A thick coat takes longer to settle and is easier to move. Begin with a small amount and add only where needed.
  3. Rubbing after a film starts to form. Continuous circular motion can lift the layer underneath. Spread briefly, then press or tap.
  4. Applying the next step too soon. Wet skincare or sunscreen can move when primer is added. Give each important layer time to become even and comfortable.
  5. Heavy pressure from fingers, brush, or sponge. Foundation should be placed over primer, not scrubbed into it.
  6. Dry surface flakes. Makeup can collect on loose skin. Use gentle, consistent skincare rather than trying a harsh last-minute scrub before an event.
  7. A pairing that simply does not cooperate. Even with careful technique, two specific formulas can roll together. Test another foundation or skip primer on one side to confirm.

The popular rule that every “water-based” primer must be paired with a water-based foundation, while every “silicone-based” primer needs a silicone foundation, is too simple. Many modern formulas contain water, silicones, powders, humectants, polymers, oils, and film formers together. Amount, drying time, and friction often matter more than the first ingredient.

How to stop Good Grip Hydrating Primer from pilling

SHEGLAM Good Grip Hydrating Primer

SHEGLAM Good Grip Hydrating Primer at Jamila Egypt

Best adjustment: use a very thin layer, spread it quickly, and stop touching it while the gel becomes tacky rather than wet.

Do not: mix it into foundation or keep rubbing because the surface feels sticky. The grip is part of its intended character.

Current price: EGP 499; available when checked on 7 September 2026.

View Good Grip Hydrating Primer

SHEGLAM describes Good Grip as an oil- and silicone-free gel and lists water, aloe leaf water, glycerin, PVP, and pullulan in the formula. Because it is designed to create grip, a heavy layer can remain more movable than you expect. Apply less than your first instinct, especially if moisturiser and sunscreen already leave a dewy finish.

After the primer settles, dot foundation in a few places and tap with a sponge or brush. Do not drag a large amount from the centre to the edge of the face. If Good Grip pills over one sunscreen but works on bare skin, the combination or the amount of the sunscreen layer is the likely issue.

How to apply Camera On without lifting the layer

SHEGLAM Camera On Smooth & Blur Primer

Best adjustment: warm a small amount between the fingertips, press it over visible texture, and leave the area alone.

Do not: massage it repeatedly across the entire face or polish foundation over it with firm circles.

Current price: EGP 499; available when checked on 7 September 2026.

View Camera On Smooth & Blur Primer

Camera On has a silicone-rich, soft-focus formula. Its role is to smooth the feel and appearance of texture, so precise placement works better than a thick all-over coat. Press a rice-grain amount across each problem area, wait briefly, and apply foundation with light tapping. If you want less coverage, concealer on selected areas may disturb the primer less than a full heavy base.

How to use Pore No More on an oily T-zone

SHEGLAM Pore No More Primer

Best adjustment: press a tiny amount into the nose, centre forehead, and chin only.

Do not: stack a thick moisturiser, a full layer of pore primer, heavy foundation, and a large amount of powder in the same zone.

Current price: EGP 469; available when checked on 7 September 2026.

View Pore No More Primer

Pore No More begins with dimethicone and includes silica, supporting its smooth, matte, pore-focused direction. Treat it as a local tool. A large amount can make the foundation sit on a thick layer instead of becoming one even base. For combination skin, keep Good Grip on areas that need freshness and Pore No More on the T-zone, without stacking both in the same place.

A pilling-resistant routine for oily skin

  1. Use a light moisturiser only if your skin needs it.
  2. Apply your normal full amount of sunscreen evenly; do not reduce sun protection to make makeup easier.
  3. Wait until sunscreen has formed an even, non-moving layer.
  4. Press a small amount of Pore No More into the T-zone, or Camera On where texture is the priority.
  5. Tap on thin foundation. Add coverage only after the first pass is stable.
  6. Powder the areas that become shiny rather than coating the entire face.

If your sunscreen is rich, you may not need primer outside the T-zone. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, so do not respond to pilling by stripping the skin or skipping sunscreen. Simplify the number and weight of layers instead.

A pilling-resistant routine for dry-looking skin

  1. Prepare the skin consistently before makeup day; avoid aggressive last-minute exfoliation.
  2. Apply a moisturiser that already works for you and allow it to settle.
  3. Apply sunscreen evenly and wait for the film to stabilise.
  4. Use a very thin layer of Good Grip only where extra adhesion is useful.
  5. Tap foundation onto the face with a lightly damp sponge or a brush using minimal pressure.
  6. Skip powder on visibly dry areas and set only where needed.

If you can see loose skin flakes before makeup, primer cannot erase them. Focus on comfortable skin preparation and thin base layers. If dryness comes with burning, itching, swelling, marked redness, or a rash, stop using the suspected product and seek appropriate medical advice.

How to rescue makeup after pilling starts

  1. Stop rubbing. More blending usually creates more particles.
  2. Lift loose pills gently. Use a clean, soft brush or the edge of a clean sponge without scraping the skin.
  3. Press the surrounding base. A barely damp sponge can reconnect the edges.
  4. Replace only what is missing. Tap on a pinhead amount of foundation or concealer. Do not restart every layer over the same spot.
  5. Leave it alone. A small area often looks better from normal viewing distance than after repeated repair.

When the product may actually be the problem

Pilling alone is usually a performance issue. Check the product itself if it has an unexpected smell, colour or texture change, has been stored in excessive heat, no longer mixes as it normally does, or is beyond the period-after-opening guidance on its package. Stop using it if it causes burning, itching, swelling, or another unexpected reaction. Jamila's makeup and skincare products are final sale for change-of-mind, shade, texture, or suitability reasons, but an incorrect, damaged, or defective delivery should be reported promptly under the current Refund Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my primer pill even when I use only a little?

The layer underneath may already be moving, or your application may use more friction than the formula tolerates. Test the primer alone on one clean area. If it behaves there, simplify the skincare and sunscreen combination or change the foundation technique.

How long should I wait after primer before foundation?

There is no universal number for every climate and formula. Wait until the primer feels even and stable rather than freshly wet. Good Grip can remain tacky by design; tacky does not mean you should keep rubbing it. Test your full routine before an important event.

Does silicone cause primer pilling?

Silicone is not automatically the cause. Camera On and Pore No More are silicone-led formulas designed for smoothing. They are more likely to move when applied too heavily or rubbed repeatedly, but water-based gels and sunscreen films can pill as well.

Can I mix primer with foundation to stop pilling?

Mixing changes the way both products form a film and can reduce grip, blur, coverage, or wear. Apply separate thin layers first. If you want a sheerer base, use less foundation or a formula designed for lighter coverage.

Should I skip sunscreen if it makes primer pill?

No. Sunscreen is the protective step. Change the number of skincare layers, allow settling time, test a different primer or foundation, or skip primer before reducing the labelled amount of sunscreen.

Is pilling the same as an allergic reaction?

No. Pilling describes product rolling on the surface. Burning, itching, swelling, marked redness, or a rash may signal irritation or allergy and should be treated differently. Stop the suspected product and follow appropriate medical guidance.

The practical fix

Start with less product and less movement. Let skincare and sunscreen settle, use primer only where it solves a real problem, and tap foundation over it. Good Grip works best as a thin gripping gel, Camera On as a pressed soft-focus layer, and Pore No More as a targeted T-zone tool. If the problem continues, use a half-face test and change one step at a time.
